Anchor Symbol Meaning: Hope, Steadfastness and Faith
The anchor as a symbol: hope, stability and faith. Its use in early Christianity, antiquity, heraldry and dreams, and what it means today.
The trident as a symbol: Poseidon’s power over the sea, Shiva’s trishula, the number three and its use in coats of arms, flags and tattoos.
Three prongs on a long shaft. Few tools so simple have given rise to such a powerful symbol. The trident is the weapon of the sea god in Greece and Rome, the emblem of one of Hinduism’s most important deities, the national coat of arms of Ukraine — and even the logo of a luxury car brand.
In this article we explore the meaning of the trident across cultures, the importance of the number three in its symbolism, and how it’s interpreted today as an amulet, tattoo or spiritual symbol.
In Greek mythology, the trident is the inseparable attribute of Poseidon, god of the sea, earthquakes and horses. According to the myths, it was forged by the Cyclopes — the same who gave Zeus his thunderbolt and Hades his helm of invisibility.
With his trident, Poseidon:
The Romans identified Poseidon with Neptune, and the trident became the universal emblem of dominion over the sea. We find it in Baroque fountains such as the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna — which inspired Maserati’s famous logo — and in countless coastal cities’ coats of arms.
The trident was also originally a fishing tool: a multi-pronged spear for catching large fish. In Roman arenas it was wielded by the retiarii, gladiators who fought with a net and trident, imitating fishermen.
In Hinduism, the trident is called the trishula and is the attribute of Shiva, god of destruction and transformation. Its symbolism is rich and has several readings:
With the trishula, Shiva destroys ignorance and ego so the soul can be freed. It’s not a weapon of violence but of spiritual transformation. The goddess Durga also wields it in her battle against the buffalo demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
In yoga and meditation, the trishula is sometimes linked to the three subtle energy channels (ida, pingala and sushumna) that meet between the eyebrows.
The trident is, in essence, the number three made into an object. And three is one of humanity’s most sacred numbers: the Christian Holy Trinity, the three worlds of many cosmologies (heaven, earth and underworld), body, mind and spirit.

In medieval Christian art, the devil often appears with a pitchfork or trident. There are several explanations: pagan gods (such as Poseidon, or Hades, sometimes shown with a bident) being recast as demonic figures, and the image of punishment, with the farmer’s pitchfork turned into a tool of hell.
But this use is late and doesn’t cancel the trident’s original meaning, which is about power, protection and mastery over chaos — not evil.
As a tattoo, the trident is chosen for:
It pairs well with waves, anchors, serpents and Greek motifs. As an amulet, it’s worn for strength in times of change and protection in chaotic situations.
Is the trident a negative symbol? No. Its original meaning is power, protection and mastery over natural forces. The association with the devil is a later medieval interpretation.
What do the three prongs of the trident mean? It depends on the culture: in Hinduism, the three gunas or the three times (past, present and future); in Western tradition, they’re linked to the trinity or to sky, earth and sea.
What’s the difference between Poseidon’s and Shiva’s trident? Poseidon’s symbolizes dominion over the sea, storms and earthquakes. Shiva’s trishula symbolizes the destruction of ignorance and spiritual transformation. Both share the idea of power over chaos.
What does a trident tattoo mean? Strength, emotional control, love of the sea and, in some cases, Hindu spirituality or the number three as a symbol of family.
Is a trident lucky? As an amulet it’s associated with protection and inner strength, especially for getting through turbulent times.
The trident is the symbol of whoever governs what seems ungovernable: the sea, the trembling earth, the illusion of the ego. From Poseidon to Shiva, its three prongs speak of power, balance and transformation. Wearing it is a reminder that even in the storm, you can take back control.
